Well I was wrong about the rebuild.  I still got an error ...

/usr/bin/mythbackend: error while loading shared 
libraries: /usr/bin/mythbackend: undefined symbol: 
_ZN11MythContextC1ERK7QStringb

... which is in /usr/lib/libmyth.so.  Adding /usr/lib to ld.so.conf and 
rerunning ldconfig seems to let mythbackend run again.  I can't check the 
frontend from work yet.
