Hi Axel, many thanks for your response. apt-get update worked fine, and apt-cache produced results that looked plausible. I did apt-get remove synaptic followed by rpm -i synaptic_0.52-17.rh9.at_i386.rpm and all seems ok. Will try to file a bugzilla report, but on previous attempts I got lost. John
