I also have a Toshiba Satelite (M30?) with an GeForce FX Go5200 and it
works quite well.

That's a floating point expection.

Perhaps a mixing of drivers? Try nvidia-graphics-settings 6106, and
restart X (make sure any old nvidia module has been unloaded, in doubt
reboot).
lsmod|grep nvidia should give something like nvidia_1_0_6106, not
nvidia.
ldd `which glxgears` | grep libGL
should point to /usr/lib/nvidia-graphics-1.0-6106/tls/libGL.so.1
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/nvidia should point to nvidia-graphics-1.0-6106
And the config file should contain
ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions"
ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
and remove Load "dri"
(done automatically by the rpm and stored in a new config files called
*.nvidia).
