I am still using lame-devel-3.97-14.fc6.at.i386.rpm,
which has it. That is why I noticed its absence only yesterday.
freshrpms did the same, by the way.

When I was compiling darkice, I noticed that in FC5 lame was not being
detected. Also, twolame and faac were never detected, either in FC5 or FC6.

The problem was that the Makefile was looking for the .a to detect the
presence
of a library. I had to patch it to make it look for the .so instead.

But I do not understand why removing the static version of a library will
help anything. Just to avoid static linking? Isn't it the right course
sometimes?
