The best place to discuss this is at the lirc list. Because the proper
fix is for lirc to instantiate devices/kernel modules through the
hotplug/udev mechanism - everything else is a workaround trying to do
that outside of lirc with less knowledge about what is required or not
than lirc. But for short term we are discussing workarounds.
Adding an unconditional modprobe to the lirc startup scripts seems
wrong, as there are scenarios where lirc works w/o any kernel
modules. Which is why lirc is the only kmdl package that has no
dependencies from the main package to the kmdls. At the very beginning
lirc would pull in lirc-kmdl unconditionally but some people
complained (check the archives).
The current option with having the user optionally set up
/etc/sysconfig/modules seems the cleanest workaround. A commented
entry to have somthing to start with could help. But as said the
proper fix is to have lirc's source code do the hotpluging.
