Ok, the problem with the vesa and nv drivers I finally figured out.
The card has 2 DVI outputs and it seems that the monitor was connected 
to the "second" output (although they aren't numbered).
For the graphical grub screen en the text part of the boot or for VTs 
this doesn't seem to matter, but the XOrg auto configuration doesn't 
seem to like it. (For those who want all the details, I put it in the 
bugreport https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=212432)

So now I'm only left with figuring out why the nvidia driver has a GPF.
