FWIW I'm building mythtv packages on SMP hardware since May 2004 and
haven't stepped into this.

I was under the impression that rpm was resetting the environment, but
if your setting of MAKEFLAGS passes through, this is not true.

I'd consider this a bug of rpm, which cannot be rectified by resetting
all dangerous variables (several ld and gcc influencing env vars come
to mind), or taking any similar countermeasures. After masking off -j
one would have to do so for -k, -i etc.
