Yes, it is the first time I see apt wanting to _install_ extra
packages, when it is asked to _remove_ something (???)

Hm, I suggest to try the following:

apt-get install kernel-module-alsa-`uname -r` alsa-driver alsa-lib libasound2-

This should not start aksing about upgrading kernels.

apt/yum still don't have a nice solution for working with kernel
modules (the pick random ones, e.g. smp on non-smp machines), so one
always sees funny things :(

The workaround is to explicitly give the kernel uname -r to apt/yum to
work with like above.
