You're right - I suddenly got a lot more rpm verify failures last night
and assumed it was for the reason above. I do an rpm -V on every package
and compare the results with a 'known failures' list. The reason for the
extra failures was quite subtle, e.g.

S.5....T  c /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf (rpm-4.3.1)
S.5....T c /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf (rpm-4.2.1)
