No I haven't noticed any differences; I only recompiled because I'd
assumed that the cpuspeed driver (in cpuspeed.conf) would't work
properly without the kernel processor set. Further observance has proved
this to be wrong.

Thanks for the help, and the ipw2100 is now working, albeit only under
stock kernel. Now if only I knew how to uninstall a custom kernel.
