The problem with apt/yum is that they detect a possible upgrade, but
don't try to be minimal in the pulled packages. E.g. there is an
upgrade for nvidia for multiple kernels. Instead of picking the
upgrades for matching kernels, they just pick the first encountered in
their internal database, and if the matching kernel is not there
apt/yum will gladly provide you with a new one ...
For apt there are nice scripts by Panu that are more inteligen (try to
upgrade for running kernel only), but you can do this also by hand
with
apt-get install kernel-module-foo-`uname -r`
(in fact the above is the currently recommended way of installing any
kernel module rpm, until some more sofisticated scripts become default
in apt's config, e.g. the scripts from Panu).
